June Fishing Report 2027
The start of winter has delivered some exceptional fishing right across the region. While winter in Weipa is mild compared with much of Australia, even a slight drop in temperature or a sudden weather change can make the fishing far more challenging. Thankfully, we have experienced very little of that this year, allowing for consistently good conditions and some outstanding days on the water.
Several groups this month were visiting Weipa for the first time, with a number of clients also experiencing saltwater fly fishing for the very first time. Watching anglers tick off new species, build confidence and develop their saltwater skills is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do, and this month certainly delivered plenty of those moments.
The flats have once again been the standout fishery, continuing the incredible run we’ve enjoyed throughout the season. Some genuine trophy Tuskfish have been landed this month, which is always satisfying considering how often they make it back to the reef before we can get our hands on them. Along with multiple Tuskies, Blue Bastards, Golden Trevally and big Queenfish, we have also encountered a few of the rarer bastard species to keep things interesting. The sheer number of fish on the flats this season has been remarkable, and we all believe the cyclone has done the fishery a world of good after several years of sustained pressure.
Offshore fishing has also come alive, with bait balls becoming more frequent and attracting feeding tuna, Queenfish and a wide variety of other pelagic species. If you’ve never experienced a bait ball in full swing, it deserves a place at the top of your bucket list. It is like watching a National Geographic documentary unfold in front of you, with pelagic fish, sharks and seabirds all competing in a spectacular feeding frenzy. Sometimes it is just as enjoyable to sit back and take it all in.
The estuaries continue to fish well. The fish are making us work a little harder than earlier in the season, but the rewards have still been well worth the effort. The standout capture this month was guide Scott putting client Paul onto a magnificent 97-centimetre Barramundi. In Weipa, that is a true trophy fish on fly, with the majority of our Barramundi measuring 75 centimetres or less. A fantastic achievement and a credit to both guide and angler.
With conditions continuing to look promising, we are excited to see what July has in store.
Kind Regards, Flux team.
