Opening Season 2026

Our 2026 season has kicked off about as well as we could have hoped. After a solid wet season, the whole guide team was itching to get back on the water and it didn’t disappoint. Conditions lined up early, and the fishing fired straight away.

Of course, fishing always comes with its slower moments, that’s part of the game. But overall, we’ve had a huge range of quality options on offer right from the start.

It didn’t take long for things to settle after Cyclone Narelle, with the water cleaning up quickly and the flats and beaches coming back to life. There’s been a healthy spread of jelly prawns around, which has kept the usual Weipa favourites active, along with consistent manta ray action across the flats.

The blue bastards and tuskies have been a real highlight so far. After a tougher year last season for a number of reasons, it’s been great to see them feeding aggressively again. Combined with some cracking weather over the past couple of weeks, it’s shaping up to be a standout flats season for these species.

We’ve also been seeing plenty of permit moving through. While we haven’t dedicated a huge amount of time targeting them just yet, we are getting a few runs on the board and the signs are very promising for a big season ahead! Something we know a lot of our clients will be excited about.

In the rivers, things have been just as consistent. Barra and mangrove jacks have been keeping us busy, especially when the weather turns and the sun drops away. With how things are shaping up, we’re expecting the systems to continue fishing well right through winter.

If there’s been one downside, it’s the slower pelagic activity early on. But with everything else firing, it hasn’t taken away from what’s been an excellent start to the year.

Looking ahead, May is shaping up to be one of our busiest months of the season. We’re excited to see how things unfold from here
